For this final project I want to manipulate and compose a series of 'selfies' based off of my own Instagram photos. I plan on digitally altering them, printing them out and painting on them, then scanning them back in to digitally manipulate them again. This will continue until I am satisfied with the image. I want to have three to five total images, each being in square format like Instagram.
When I take selfies I don't just snap a shot. I see it as a piece of art and a way to get creative. I find the right moment, and will compose a shot to take of myself. (adding light if needed or cropping the photo a certain way). So by taking these and manipulating them further with digital alterations and paint, I am making them into a more respectable art-form to the viewer.

Self portraits are a common theme on the blogs today, but I'm digging this idea of selfies since they're such a common thing in our culture. Run with it
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of printing them, painting on them, and scanning them back in. Something to think about will be if the final images will be just flat printed out, or have one final layer of paint or manipulation.
ReplyDeleteYou're idea seems like it will depend greatly on presentation. If you have all of these lined up like in a gallery space, they will be boring. If you find a way to install them like a collaged gallery space, you can have the images and the installation be cohesive. That would help with your concern of respectable presentation. Don't be afraid of the snap-shot aesthetic, that's what photography has become about, moreso than formalism even.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your unique approach to the 'selfie' and attempting to change the way people think about them. I think incorporating analog elements into them in different stages will be very cool, and I like what Dylan said above about incorporating paint to be physically on final prints possibly.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! Selfies are becoming more and more popular within our generation, so I feel like your audience will relate to these images quite amazingly. It's humorous in a way, it might be even more relatable if you include hashtags.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of mixed media with digital and that back and forth process. But other than the technical and visual aspects, I am interested in why you choose the composition of your own face and what that may mean.
ReplyDeleteI like your idea of a "selfie" final project and I'm really interested in seeing you alter them through painting and scanning them back in.
ReplyDeleteCool idea, I would make sure that you do them in very different styles though to make sure that they don't look too similar, or just do a ton of them
ReplyDeleteIf you're making a series it might be interesting to combine all of the images onto the same page or something. But I really like your idea to paint on them. I think it will look really good
ReplyDeleteI love this concept. Great photo choices to show, it gave me a nice idea for the base of what you're planning to do. I can't wait to see what you plan to do to each image, as i'm not familiar with your personal artistic style off the paper. Also, the idea of a series of photos intrigued me, but maybe you could make a very large single frame picture that combines all the images of yourself.
ReplyDeleteI like the modern technological twist you put on the typical 'self portrait' idea. Do you plan on having yourself become a hybrid or abstracted figure or do you plan on staying more true to the image you already have?
